Free to eat outdoors

Iceland has right to roam — you may eat and rest at public places. Take your trash with you and respect nature.

Where to buy food

  • Bónus — cheapest, widely available
  • Krónan — good selection, in Reykjavík and larger towns
  • N1 / Olís gas stations — bread and coffee on the road

Practical tips

  • Buy food at a grocery store (Bónus, Krónan) before you set off — cheaper than cafés.
  • Iceland's right to roam lets you eat and rest on public land — but not on farmland or private property.
  • Take your trash with you — there are no bins on hiking trails.
  • Be careful around birds and animals — don't feed them, it disrupts natural foraging.
  • Wind and rain can make table stops uncomfortable — keep a tarp in the car as backup.
