Short answer
If you do not want to change hotels, stay in Reykjavík and drive day trips. You reach the Golden Circle, South Coast, Snæfellsnes and Reykjanes in 1-3 hours of driving. Good for 3-5 day trips or a first visit.
Driving times are approximate and based on paved roads in summer. In winter, driving can be 30-50% slower due to snow and ice. Always check road conditions before you drive.
| Day | Route | Driving | Night |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reykjavík → Þingvellir → Geysir → Gullfoss → Reykjavík | 300 km · 4 hrs | Reykjavík |
| 2 | Reykjavík → Seljalandsfoss → Skógafoss → Reynisfjara → Vík → Reykjavík | 380 km · 5 hrs | Reykjavík |
| 3 | Reykjavík → Borgarnes → Stykkishólmur → Kirkjufell → Arnarstapi → Reykjavík | 420 km · 5.5 hrs | Reykjavík |
| 4 | Reykjavík → Blue Lagoon → Reykjanes → Reykjavík | 120 km · 1.5 hrs | Reykjavík |
| 5 | Reykjavík — city day | 0 km · walking | Reykjavík |
Reykjavík → Þingvellir → Geysir → Gullfoss → Reykjavík
The Golden Circle — a classic day trip. Þingvellir (parliament), Geysir (geyser) and Gullfoss (two-tier falls). Add the Kerið crater if time allows.
Reykjavík → Seljalandsfoss → Skógafoss → Reynisfjara → Vík → Reykjavík
The South Coast — waterfalls, black sand and sea stacks. A longer day than the Golden Circle. Caution at Reynisfjara: sneaker waves are deadly.
Reykjavík → Borgarnes → Stykkishólmur → Kirkjufell → Arnarstapi → Reykjavík
The Snæfellsnes peninsula — mountains, cliffs, black sand and the Búðir black church. Kirkjufell is the icon. A long day but varied scenery.
Reykjavík → Blue Lagoon → Reykjanes → Reykjavík
A rest day — the Blue Lagoon and the volcanic Reykjanes peninsula. Book the lagoon in advance. Good for flight days or rest between trips.
Reykjavík — city day
Hallgrímskirkja, Perlan, Harpa, the Sundhöllin pool and the food market at Grandi. A good day to rest and explore the city.

Frequently asked questions
Is Reykjavík a good base for day trips?
Yes, for 3-5 days. You reach the Golden Circle, South Coast and Snæfellsnes in 1-3 hours. But for longer trips or the Ring Road, change accommodation.
Do I need a car?
Not necessarily. All these trips are available as organized tours from Reykjavík. But a car gives you freedom in timing.
