River Crossings

How to cross rivers on F-roads safely

1

Check depth first

Walk the river before driving. If water is above the door — don't go.

2

Drive slowly and steadily

Don't stop in the water. Keep ~10 km/h, low gear.

3

Never stop mid-river

If you stop, the car can sink and the current can move it.

4

After crossing: check brakes

Brakes can be wet. Drive slowly until they dry.

River crossings are dangerous. If unsure — DON'T go. Rental car insurance does NOT cover water damage. Call 112 if in trouble.

Worst crossings to avoid

F26 (Sprengisandur) and F88 (Askja) are known for difficult crossings. Go only with an experienced guide.
