What's open

On holidays, shops, banks and most public institutions are closed. Gas stations and some grocery stores (10-11, Olís) may be open.

Restaurants and cafes are usually open, but booking ahead is wise. Cinemas and pools are often open.

Christmas & New Year customs

  • Christmas starts at 18:00 on Christmas Eve — family meal and gifts.
  • Thirteen Yule Lads come down from the mountains, one per day, from Dec 12.
  • New Year's Eve — big fireworks, "Áramótapottur" (comedy show) on TV.
