Puffin Tours in Iceland
Where and when to see puffins — boat trips, cliffs and the care needed near colonies.
Choose your tour
Puffins are in Iceland from early May until early September, when they head back out to sea. They nest in cliffs and on islands, so a boat trip or a short walk to a colony is the best way to see them without disturbing them.
Puffin Sailing from Reykjavík
A short sail out into Faxaflói bay to the islands where puffins nest. Often combined with whale watching on the same trip.
Puffin Cliff Walk
A guided walk to a cliff colony where the birds are close — with a guide showing where you can and cannot stand. Good for cameras.
Westman Islands: Puffins and History
A trip to the Westman Islands by ferry or boat; they hold one of the country’s largest puffin colonies and Heimaey has a remarkable story.

Before you book
- Keep 2–3 metres from cliff edges and from the birds — puffins are easily disturbed.
- Avoid cliff walks in high wind; the edges crumble and gusts can push you over.
- Early summer is best, when the birds raft on the water in large groups near the cliffs.
